Our History

Our Company History

Our first store

The Eau Claire Farmer Labor Co-op Association was founded in 1935 when a few families joined together to buy a carload of coal to heat their homes. In 1936 the new cooperative purchased a 2-pump gasoline station on Wisconsin Street in Eau Claire, WI. From there, the Co-op continued to grow.

In 1938 the Eau Claire Farmer Labor Co-op Association changed their name to Consumers Cooperative Association, which is still our corporate name today.

The Big Co-op

In 1947 the Co-op purchased 8½ acres of land near Highway 53 for a future Shopping Center. The Co-op Shopping Center opened in 1948 in the property that now houses the Eastridge Center. In 1976 the Co-op purchased the adjoining property, which was used to expand the services offered to include clothing, furniture and an enlarged hardware department.

During the 1980's, with the economy out of control, the company fell on hard times. The Co-op decided to return to what it did best. The Co-op exited the hardware, clothing and furniture business and returned to their roots of selling groceries and petroleum.

Mega Foods

A new supermarket, Mega Foods, was opened adjacent to the old Co-op Shopping Center in January of 1984 and has grown into the company it is today.

Mega Foods has expanded its company to include divisions to better serve our customers. Our Mega Express division houses 11 Eau Claire and 2 Wausau convenience stores, Mega Lube & Oil division houses 2 Valvoline Express Car Care centers, Mega Splash car wash facilities and our Mega Fuels division delivering product for our Mega Express convenience stores as well as for bulk commercial needs.
